In the past, people developed relationships through physical means and face-to-face contact. Geographical factors played a huge part. Friendships were built largely amongst people who were in the same physical space, sharing similar hobbies and interests. However, technological innovation, especially the introduction of the internet, has transcended physical barriers and connected people who could be living in different areas of the country or even different parts of the world to communicate online and start a relationship. Having online friends or meeting a partner from an online dating app are some examples to illustrate. Technology has made it easier to start or maintain the different types of relationships.

While this newfound ease of communication may have allowed some negative behaviours to arise such as online bullying, there are more benefits that technology has brought about in the sphere of human relationships. Overcoming the geographical barrier is the most obvious advantage. With technologies such as social media applications, video calls and online text messaging apps, people have been drawn closer together, allowing friendships to last even when a friend has move out of the same neighbourhood. Maintaining a long-distance relationship has become more viable too, with increased points of contact for the couple. In addition, technology has also allowed friendships to burgeon amongst people with different nationalities and speaking different languages. Tools such as Google Translate have allowed communication across the myriad of languages, sparking the start of many international friendships.

To this end, technology has radically transformed the way in which human relationships are formed and maintained and it is heartening to know that this is developing towards a better direction.
